First a little about the author
The-Good-Nurse “My research is derived from trusted medical journals i.e.: PubMed, The United States Library of Medicine, The National Institute of Health, CDC, Center for Disease Control to ensure accuracy.
My process for research was developed while working on a research project for the hospital. Due to the research/initiatives starting this program the hospital earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its comprehensive total knee and total hip joint replacement programs. Afterwards I received a promotion to Coordinator of Education and Support, at the hospitals cancer center. Later I was in charge of the cancer center.
I have practice holistic care for myself and my patients. One of the essentials to health is state of mind. I have always used natural remedies first, they compliment todays medical practices. I heard Dr. Lad lecture about those same principles several years ago”
Although, Dr. Vasant Lad, M.A.Sc. is a world renowned expert on Ayurvedic Medicine. He agrees that traditional medicine is essential as well. A holistic approach is all inclusive, rounded, and complete. He is the founder and director of the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico.“CC
Deepak Chopra, M.D. and David Simon, M.D. are quoted as saying ” Dr. Vasant Lad is a true Vaidya – a knower of reality. His latest work, the Textbook of Ayurveda, attest to his indisputable role as the foremost expert in the ancient healing science.“

As soon as you start having symptoms
“This is what I did when I started experiencing symptoms of COVID-19! I took garlic capsules, vitamin C, and headed out for the health food store!”CC
The virus that causes COVID-19 is infecting people and spreading easily from person-to-person. Cases have been detected in most countries worldwide and community spread is being detected in a growing number of countries. On March 11, the COVID-19 outbreak was characterized as a pandemic by the WHOexternal icon
Characteristics of the virus
I.) How well the virus spreads between people;
II.) the severity of resulting illness;
III.) measures available to control the impact of the virus (for example, vaccines or medications that can treat the illness) and the relative success of these
IV.) In the absence of vaccine or treatment medications, nonpharmaceutical interventions become the most important response strategy. These are community interventions that can reduce the impact of disease.
- Social Distancing keep a distance of 6 ft. between you and others,
- Wear a mask if you are sick, if you must go out
- Staying home if you or family members are sick
- Covering coughs and sneezes
- Wash hand frequently
- Clean surfaces that are frequented by others
Risk of Severe Illness:
Early information out of China, where COVID-19 first started, shows that some people are at higher risk of getting very sick from this illness. This includes:
- Older adults, with risk increasing by age.
- People who have serious chronic medical conditions like:
- Heart disease
- Lung disease * Please note both natural remedies discussed in this blog also provide respiratory support -CC
Watch for symptoms:
Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death for confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.
These symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure (based on the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses).
- Shortness of breath
- Sore Throat
Multiple studies confirm that raw garlic has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Not only does it knock out the common cold and flu virus but is effective on both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (two major classifications of bacteria), fungus, intestinal parasites, and yeast. Cooking garlic, however, destroys the allicin, so you’ll need to use raw garlic to prevent or fight infections.
Studies carried out on the chemical composition of the plant show that sulfur compounds such as Allicin are important constituents of the plant. The Allicin compound does not occur in garlic until its crushed. (Londhe, et al, 2011)
“My personal choice is purchasing high grade supplements. I found Super Strength Garlic + Reisi at 4.5 cloves per capsule. Most of your health food stores carry these high grade supplements.“CC
Although garlic has the potential to be used clinically in the treatment of some disorders, care should be taken regarding its usage with other medications due to possible drug interactions that might arise as a result (174). Consult with your Physician if your taking medication.
A. sativum has been shown to have antiviral activity. viruses which are sensitive to garlic extracts are the human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV), influenza B virus, Herpes simplex virus type 1, Herpes simplex virus type 2, Parainfluenza virus type 3, vaccinia virus, vesicular stomatitis virus, and human Rhinovirus type 2 (10). One study showed that Allicin-containing supplements can prevent attacks by the common cold virus (53).
antiviral activity of garlic in humans may be secondary to a direct toxic effect on viruses. It also enhanced NK-cell (Natural killer-cell) activity that destroys virus-infected cells (7).
Although garlic is believed to be a safe substance, long-term trials of reasonable duration would provide insights into the possible side-effects of different garlic extracts. The safety of garlic should be tested especially in pregnant or breastfeeding women as well as in young children (Budzynska et al., 2012; Dante et al., 2013)
Mayo Clinic has stated, “preliminary reports suggest that garlic may reduce the severity of upper respiratory tract infection.” The findings have not yet passed the scrutiny of numerous, large, well-designed human studies, so current results are classified as “unclear.”
Oil of Oregano
” Advancing from the sore throat I began to feel other flu like symptoms. You know that body weakness/ache just before the fever ensues and by the third or fourth day I was sneezing. Although the garlic and vitamin C had some effect, it wasn’t until I added the Oil of Oregano that I felt better. Fortunately, I picked several bottles up. This was more important to me then hoarding TP! Just in case I was under quarantine. I also hoarded a little vitamin C, Gummies. I consider them my candy.”CC
Essential Oils of Oregano: Biological Activity beyond Their Antimicrobial Properties
Essential oils of oregano are widely recognized for their antimicrobial activity, as well as their antiviral and antifungal properties. Nevertheless, recent investigations have demonstrated that these compounds are also potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and cancer suppressor agents. These properties of oregano essential oils are of potential interest to the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The aim of this manuscript is to review the latest evidence regarding essential oils of oregano and their beneficial effects on health. Antiviral activity of the Lippia graveolens (Mexican oregano) essential oil and its main compound carvacrol against human and animal viruses
Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) is a plant found in Mexico and Central America that is traditionally used as a medicinal herb. In the present study, we investigated the antiviral activity of the essential oil of Mexican oregano and its major component, carvacrol, against different human and animal viruses. The MTT test (3–4,5-dimethythiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) was conducted to determine the selectivity index (SI) of the essential oil, which was equal to 13.1, 7.4, 10.8, 9.7, and 7.2 for acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex virus type 1 (ACVR-HHV-1), acyclovir-sensitive HHV-1, human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), bovine herpesvirus type 2 (BoHV-2), and bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), respectively. The human rotavirus (RV) and BoHV-1 and 5 were not inhibited by the essential oil. Carvacrol alone exhibited high antiviral activity against RV with a SI of 33, but it was less efficient than the oil for the other viruses. Thus, Mexican oregano oil and its main component, carvacrol, are able to inhibit different human and animal viruses in vitro. Specifically, the antiviral effects of Mexican oregano oil on ACVR-HHV-1 and HRSV and of carvacrol on RV justify more detailed studies.
The two natural remedies chosen (Garlic Capsules and Oil of Oregano) worked for me! I am completely free of symptoms now. I stopped into my doctors office with mask on, and requested a swab for the virus on day 2. The swab was not available and the rep for it had not gotten back to them yet. So my doctor was not able to provide testing for me. So, whether this was the infamous COVID-19 or not I feel much better about caring for myself.
As a nurse working in the hospital I picked up numerous bugs. Nasty viruses, which laid me up for weeks. Sometimes I went to work sick because it was expected. Never got sent home? I am so glad I have moved on from hospitals, I did my time 30 years! I loved caring for patients, and now will do that by Blogging. So, send me your feedback. Let me know if you have had a similar experience.
At one point I had been sick so frequently I request the Tamiflu medication from my ENT who happened upon my floor. Love that man, we should have more doctors like him. The most important factor in taking prophylactic medicine or natural herbs is to take them as soon as the symptoms begin. I feel that is when they are the most effective.
